TAG-Confucius Institute Won Both Champion and Runner-Up Titles in the Jordanian Final of the 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students
On May 14, the Jordanian final of the 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students was held in Amman. The event was sponsored by Center for Language Education and Cooperation of the Ministry of Education of China and Chinese Embassy in Jordan, and organized by The University of Jordan and China Cultural Center in Amman. After the semi-final selection, 13 contestants from Amman TAG-Confucius Institute (TAG-CI), The University of Jordan and Confucius Institute at Philadelphia University in Jordan advanced to the final round.
More than 300 people attended the event including Mr. Chen Chuandong, Chinese Ambassador to Jordan; Mr. Marwan Jarrah, Dean of School of Foreign Languages of The University of Jordan; Ms. Shi Wei, Cultural Counselor of Chinese Embassy and Director of China Cultural Center in Amman; Mr. Mamoun Abu Al-Sebaa, Jordanian Director of TAG-CI; Dr. Yang Songfang, Chinese Director of TAG-CI, Ms. Randa Al-Yabroudi, Deputy Director of TAG-CI, teachers and students from Chinese teaching institutions in Jordan, students’ parents and local Chinese language enthusiasts.
This year’s competition was themed “One World, One Family” and consisted of three parts: a themed speech, a quiz on Chinese language and culture, and Chinese talent show.
In the themed speech session, the contestants shared their understanding of “One World, One Family” in fluent Chinese, focusing on their Chinese learning experience, studying in China, cultural exchanges between China and other countries, and mutual learning between civilizations. Their speeches were heartfelt and touching, fully showing the spirit and enthusiasm of young Chinese learners in Jordan.
The quiz session covered a wide range of topics, including Chinese language, history, geography, literature, philosophy, arts, science and technology, etc. The contestants were well prepared and quick-witted, answering questions with composure and confidence, demonstrating their in-depth understanding of Chinese culture and impressive language proficiency.
The Chinese talent show brought the competition to a climax. A variety of performances, such as talk show, Chinese song singing, intangible cultural heritage tie-dye, classical poetry recitation, fun dubbing, etc., were presented one after another, offering a vibrant and diverse display. While enjoying the performances, the audience deeply felt the rich and diverse cultural connotations behind Chinese language learning.
After fierce competition, Younis Abu Al Sondos from TAG-CI stood out and claimed the championship. His fluent speech, solid knowledge base and humorous talk show performance “Luxury goods and high technology” impressed both the judges and the audience. He will represent Jordan in the global final of the “Chinese Bridge” competition in China. Sama Al Shuaibi from TAG-CI won the runner-up with her clear and expressive speech, affectionate and moving singing “A prose poem written by my father” and outstanding stage presence. She will go to China to observe the global final. It is worth mentioning that Leen Odeh from TAG-CI won the third prize with her touching speech “Let love fill the world”, creative intangible cultural heritage tie-die works and excellent on-site interaction. Her performance also received high praise from both the judges and the audience.
Ambassador Chen Chuandong stated in his speech that language is a window to understanding the world and a bridge that connects hearts. He hoped that Jordanian youth would deepen their understanding of China through the Chinese language, tell stories about China-Jordan friendship well, and contribute their youthful energy to the mutual learning between Chinese and Arab civilizations.
The “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, as a brand event of global Chinese language education, provides an important platform for international Chinese learners to show their language skills, exchange cultural insights, and realize personal growth. This competition is not only a contest of language, but also a grand celebration of cultural exchange and a deep dialogue between hearts and minds.
In this competition, the contestants from TAG-CI presented outstanding performances and achieved excellent results, fully demonstrating the fruitful achievements of TAG-CI in Chinese language education, and highlighting the students’ enterprising spirit and deep understanding of Chinese culture.
Looking ahead, TAG-CI will continue to be committed to Chinese language education and cultural exchanges between China and Jordan, and inspire more young students to pursue their dreams and step onto the world stage through the “Chinese Bridge”.
